Founded in 1933, China Institute’s School of Chinese Studies is the oldest of its kind in the U.S., according to SinoVision. Reporter Lani Nelson takes viewers into a demo Mandarin Chinese class being offered as part of an open house event at the institute on East 65th street in Manhattan. From a high school teacher to a pre-med student to someone who brought his mother along, students came with diverse reasons for wanting to learn the language.

China Institute also offers cultural classes in fields like calligraphy, their most popular class, and tai chi.
